Arch

The Department of Linguistics is currently accepting applications to its M.A. and Ph.D. degree programs for Fall 2021! Deadline to apply is January 1st, 2021.

Department and Program Overview

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Georgia is a diverse and vibrant academic community dedicated to the scientific study of language in all its aspects. Linguistics has existed as an interdisciplinary, degree-granting academic program at the University of Georgia for over 30 years, and became an independent department in July 2017.

In addition to our core faculty of 14 members, with a wide range of expertise and research interests, Linguistics has a large number of affiliated faculty housed in other departments, who also teach linguistics courses and mentor students in our graduate program.

The graduate program offers degrees at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels. It provides both a strong grounding in core areas of linguistics as well as the opportunity for specialization within the broad areas of formal linguistic theory, computational linguistics, second language acquisition, sociolinguistics and language variation, and historical Indo-European linguistics. The curriculum is flexible, providing students the opportunity to build a program of study tailored to their own interests, as well as to receive training in quantitative research, fieldwork, and corpus methods.

Financial Assistance

Many M.A. and Ph.D. students are eligible for teaching assistantships, which offer experience teaching introductory linguistics courses and include a tuition waiver and a monthly stipend. Teaching assistantships are normally available to students beginning in their second year of study.

Applicants are also eligible for competitive research assistantships and other financial aid provided by the Graduate School. These include the Presidential Fellows Program and the Regents’ Out-of-State Tuition Waiver, which allows applicants from states outside Georgia to qualify for in-state tuition rates, representing a 2/3 reduction of costs. All applicants are encouraged to indicate in their applications whether they wish to be considered for assistantships or other financial aid.

For more information regarding funding and assistantships, please visit our Financial Assistance Page.
